Goals, Revisited

In case you’re curious, or plain ‘ol nosy, here are snippets of our lives in the past couple of months:

1. 5K Run – Urban Project Simplify May challenge was to commit ourselves to a regular exercise regime to prepare for a 5K run. Thanks to a reader, we started Focus T25, a 25 minute high-intensity workout that- though leave me gasping for air in less than five minutes- was easy enough to slip into a busy day. During days where a workout wasn’t feasible I’d go for a 4K walk or hop on my bike for a short ride.

And, at the end of May, I completed my first 5K (ever)!

2, Working, Working, Working – Both Daniel and I took on new projects at work. It’s been challenging, stressful, frustrating but good for our careers. That said, I am debating the value of my career choices; some weeks, it is rewarding (financially, at the very least), but come month end (like right now), I just want to crawl into a hole and cry.

3. Travel – All the travelling started back in late-March when Daniel took on a couple new projects at work that require extensive travelling. So he’s being living a semi-nomadic life, leaving home every other week or so since late-March. In May, I went to Vegas for bachelorette. In June, we spent a couple weeks in Brazil. Earlier this month, we both traveled for work. We like the travelling, but it is hard being apart, especially when the little one is left behind. Fortunately for us, we have lots of family nearby fighting to take the little one in and lavish him with love and attention.

4. Other projects – Toronto has an upcoming municipal election and we’re volunteering for a mayoral candidate’s campaign, attending events, canvassing neighborhoods, and spamming people’s emails. We also started growing our own food in a community garden. I find my mind constantly preoccupied by the well-being of our little garden. Are the vegetables growing okay? When should I harvest the basil? How do I make my own organic fertilizer? Did I water enough? Over water? Sometimes I visit the garden just to look at it. I am learning gardening through trial and error. So far, the daily harvest of zucchinis has been rewarding.

5. Family time – Time outside work and travel is limited and it is important to spend each second of it together. Between 4:30 (when the little returns home from daycare) and 7:30 PM (the little’s bedtime) each week day (excluding travel days), it’s family time. The laptops are turned off, all other electronic devices are put away, and we play. Most days we take our bikes for a ride or visit the garden before eating dinner. Sometimes we mix in a little campaign volunteering and canvass the neighbourhood or attend an event. The little one likes to hand out flyers and wear his mayoral candidate pin.

So we’ve been kinda preoccupied this summer with other commitments, leaving Urban Departures in a bit of a lurch. It stressed me out, at first- the lack of posting on the blog. We had set out to post 3 times a week this year and clearly, that wasn’t happening. However, re-reading our goals for the year reminded me of Urban Departures’ vision for simplicity and a resolution to live more clutter free- clutter which includes stress and anxiety. The reminder was liberating: If certain goals is causing a slip in my big goal, then to hell with those goals!

Kinda.

Goals should be re-visited and updated as you and your circumstances change. Our circumstances and priorities have shifted over the last few months and with that, so should our goals.

2014 Goals, Edited Version

Financial

  • Automate savings and investment accounts – Completed
  • Save 25% of gross income (including company contributions to RRSPs); max out the 2014 contribution room in our TFSAs – In progress. A great thing about our new work arrangement is the increase in pay. We have been exceeding the saving goals; however, we are considering on using the “extra savings” for home renos and more travel. And, we maxed out both of our 2014 TFSA contribution rooms in the spring!
  • Learn about dividend investing within 6 months by reading 3 books and assess the practicality of evolving our portfolio – Not happening
  • {Revised goal} Learn about dividend investing in last quarter of 2014 by reading 1 book

Blog

  • Set posting schedule with 3 posts/week; write 90% of posts at least a week ahead – Not happening
  • {Revised goal} Post once a week from now to end of October; revisit posting schedule during last quarter of 2014
  • Set guest post schedule; guest post quarterly – Not happening

Personal

  • Wake up between 6:30 and 7AM and be in bed by 10:30PM weekdays; do not watch TV in bed past 11PM – Working on it.
  • Purge unused items from the wardrobe, kitchen and basement storage locker – Completed, though we find that we accumulate items really quickly and require a quarterly mini-purge.
  • Do 2 family activities (biking and hiking) at least 3 times/month each during the warmer months – Biking regularly, but haven’t hiked yet
  • Take two family vacations, one of which being a cottage week or weekend – Washington trip planned for spring has been postponed till winter due to Daniel’s business travel schedule. Cottage trip planned for end of August. Might try to squeeze in a family trip to San Fran in the fall.
  • Travel to a country or city (outside of Canada) we’ve never been before – Completed. Brazil!

I wondered where you two disappeared to – welcome back! 🙂 Sounds like you have a lot of stuff going on, and congrats (a little belated) on completing your first ever 5k run… it’s a great feeling crossing that finish line, isn’t it? Also, don’t burn yourself out!!

I think we have a pretty good rhythm right now, but I do admit, there are some weeks at work where I feel overwhelmed and have multiple emotional breakdowns. It’s not pretty. The 5K was really fun! Afterwards, I was sure I’d be a runner, but I haven’t ran since. I squeeze in 25 minute workouts or yoga sessions or even walks, but haven’t been able to get back into the running.

    Very ambitious indeed!

Welcome back – I can completely see how blogging might get sidelined, but don’t worry too much about it! I think it’s great to prioritise Mr small, cause really, that will be very enriching long term. Photos posted, to start with, for Japan.

I’ve stepped back a little from blogging, too. Life just gets in the way sometimes, and that’s perfectly alright!

    • Emily August 1, 2014 at 9:09 AM

It took me a while to accept that the lack of blogging, but when I finally did, it was liberating and I was able to focus on my other commitments more.

  • Newlyweds on a Budget July 31, 2014 at 11:31 AM

MY husband actually suggested a trip to Brazil for our big trip in January! We both really want something similar to our Costa Rica trip, where there is plenty of sightseeing and adventure stuff to do, but also an area for relaxing and getting drinks. We also would love to do New Zealand, but holy mother flights are expensive.
Regarding blog posting– if I get one post a week these days, I consider that a win ; )
    You take beautiful photos btw!

    • Emily August 1, 2014 at 9:00 AM

Go to Brazil! It’s so beautiful, with a perfect blend of outdoorsy-ness/adventure and culture/metropolises. And apparently, after January 10 is the start of low season (don’t quote me on that though). I want to take a trip to Costa Rica; I was considering that Costa Rica over Brazil when I saw the costs of Brazil during the World Cup, but the World Cup won.

Thank you! I do like photography.

I stumbled onto your blog when looking up Canadian Personal Finance Conference and was glad I did. 🙂 Love both your writing styles!

I went to Greece back in May. I would love to travel again this year, but Greece was already a pretty big trip. I guess you can say it was our honeymoon? And now we’re planning on getting married…we’re a little unconventional like that.

Costa Rica is so beautiful. We rented a car one day while we were there, drove around a bit and had a surf lesson.

  • Dan @ Our Big Fat Wallet August 1, 2014 at 11:30 PM

Ive never been to Brazil but I hear its beautiful. Since the world cup is over I would assume it has slowed down there a bit. Id love to visit one day but next year we are planning a trip to NYC

    • Emily August 8, 2014 at 11:42 AM

Brazil is beautiful. We only had the opportunity to see a small part of it, but Rio is on my list of top favourite cities. NYC is on that list too- number 2, second to Paris. NYC is so dynamic and fun and you can experience at so many different price points. Happy trip planning.

Woah! The amount of stuff you guys do just makes my head spin. Your younger years are definitely the time to both travel and get ahead, which you’re definitely doing, but that is seriously a lot of commitments.

If you add another kid to the roster, I think you will have to seriously consider slowing down substantially or you’ll eventually be completely sucked out and start to go crazy. I think you’ve made some great adjustments to your goals to account for your busyness, but you may have to do some further pruning to keep your yourselves and your family strong.

Having kids and 2 working parents is hard enough all by itself. When you add in all that other stuff, it’s bordering on insane.

However, I see that you guys are able to make some time for fun family activities between 4:30 and 7:30. While I was working 2 jobs (day job and website) and my wife was working, I was never able to really make that fun time happen. It would mostly be used up by chores, cooking, and bedtime routine with the kid(s). If there did happen to be 15 minutes for play, I was usually too exhausted to be fully engaged with my daughter. I still tried, but it was rough.

I knew I needed to make some changes and I did. Keep up the good work guys, but don’t burn yourselves out!

    • Emily August 8, 2014 at 11:49 AM

I make my own head spin. I tend to take on much more than I have time for.

Daniel’s business travel will definitely need to slow down when we have a second kid. Handling one by myself with a full time job is already exhausting! That, and we miss daddy too much when he’s gone. I agree that goals and commitments will require further “pruning” as time progresses and circumstances change. We cannot continue this way if a second kiddo was in the picture!

It is hard to stay engaged after work. Sometimes, if there are deadlines, I am distracted and it takes a lot of self control to not check email etc. Or, I look forward to 7:30PM so I can continue working. It’s a struggle, but something Daniel and I are committed to, and in retrospect, it’s pretty nice to have that family time.

Some of our work commitments are slowing down- yay!- and we have a vacation planned for the end of the month. It’ll be time to refresh!
